Battle of the Books

Battle of the Books is a reading quiz-bowl competition held in March between Tennessee and Virginia Middle School. The goal of this activity is to increase students’ reading for enjoyment and foster connections between the two schools. For the Battle of the Books, students collaborate with their teammates to read books that have been selected by a the librarians of each school.

TMS will have two teams for the competition, a 7th grade team and an 8th grade team. Teams will meet during lunch time - no after school meetings. Each team will be coached by teachers who will help teams prepare for the competition. Books are provided, and all students who participate will receive a Battle of the Books T-Shirt. The overall winning team members will receive an individual trophy.

Teams will begin reading and meeting in October. The Battle will be held in March at the Bristol Public Library. Students will be excused from school the day of the competition. Transportation to the library and back to TMS is provided. Parents, friends and families members are encouraged to attended to watch the teams compete.

More information will be shared in Language Arts classes including a form for signing up to join a team.
